During the Battle of Maelstorm in Pirates of the Caribbean: At the World’s End, Elizabeth Swann used the Chinese sword jian.

 

The jian is a fairly simple sword: its blade is flat, double-edged, and single-handed.

 

A tassel is usually attached to the pommel. The hilt is either a cross-guard curved at the ends or disc-shaped.

William Turner, played by Orlando Bloom, is a good swords smith. He was an apprentice to a local master smith in Port Royal, where he forged James Norrington sword.


In the film series, he is seen to have no difficulty in using any swords.
He however is more comfortable using the cutlass sword.

 

A cutlass is a pirate saber with a straight or slightly curved blade with a French cupped or basket hilt. Its average length is about 0.6 meters.

 

Captain Jack Sparrow sword – The beat up sword of Captain Jack Sparrow is a 17th century English military hanger.

Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, used the English military hanger for combat. The Captain Jack Sparrow sword is the most famous of all Pirates of the Caribbean movie prop swords.

 

Jack Sparrow has used it in his unforgettable fight scenes with Will Turner, Davy Jones, and Hector Barbossa.


The English military hanger is a longer version of cutlass. While the cutlass measures about 0.6 meters, the hanger can be as long as a meter.

 

The hanger has a flat, slightly curved blade and forged with a knuckle guard on its hilt. 

 

Sword of James Norrington – The honorable Commodore James Norrington uses the small sword given to him by William Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

James Norrington is the English commodore at Port Royal who was engaged to Elizabeth Swann in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

 

His sword was forged and offered by William Turner II to mark Norrington’s promotion from captain to commodore.


James Norrington sword is a small sword: one-handed, straight-bladed, light, and roughly a meter in length. It is a thrusting, hence dueling, sword that was in prevalent use among Royal Navy officers in 18th century.

The Silver Tongue is the sword of Rachel Darling, who appeared in Pirates of the Carribbean Game Cards. The collectible card game was released in time with the promotion and showing of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

 
Rachel Darling is a vengeful character carrying out a vendetta against the mutineers of his father.  The Silver Tongue is thus born out of malice, and it possesses evil power.

 

It absorbs the souls of those who got killed by its blade. The Silver Tongue has also corrupted Rachel Darling, enmeshing her in dark thoughts and nightmares.

 

St. Piran’s Blade – A famous sword in graphic novel adaptation of the Pirates of the Caribbean, St. Piran’s blade flares up when its wielder has a heart of gold.

A magical sword, St. Piran’s Blade is a long sword ablaze in crackling fire when the swordsman has a heart of gold. It first appeared in comic short story Pirates of the Caribbean: Revenge of the Pirates.

He is bent on keeping it for himself, but Elizabeth Swann and William Turner convinced him to turn over the sword to museums for better safekeeping.

The Sword of Cortes is a long sword famous in the young adult book series, Pirates of the Caribbean: Jack Sparrow: The Sword of Cortes.

 

It is owned by Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes who conquered the Aztec civilization of South America in 16th century.

 

Captain Jack Sparrow and Davy Jones were searching for the Sword of Cortes because it has special powers.

 

Their plans were thwarted when the ghost of Hernan Cortes was stalking them, for he wished to use the sword again and bring himself back to life.

 

Davy Jones sword – This is an officially licensed broadsword of Davy Jones released by Walt Disney. Its delicate knuckle guard is made from gold hard plastic handle.

Other fantasy swords in Pirates of the Caribbean
